As a young, skinny, undersized high school volleyball player, health professor and former volleyball coach Sharkie Zartman was told by her coach that she was too small and suggested she should try another sport because she might not make it as a volleyball player.
In the first South Coast Conference game of the men's volleyball season, freshmen outside hitter Craig Narr was held out of the starting line-up. The Warriors fell two games behind in a best-of-five match and coach Dick Blount looked to Narr to add a much needed spark against Santa Barbara City College.
As the favorite heading into the California Community College Track and Field Championships, Sophomore Na'I Leni not only became the state champion by dominating her opponents but conquered the title on her first throw. Leni won her second consecutive state championship in the shotput competition last Saturday May 16 at the College of San Mateo.
