Only a scar running vertically on his left leg is what's left of the car accident that nearly cost him a limb in 1999. Six years later, Wendell Perkins has left his mark in EC's diving record books. "I think competing for El Camino was one of the best things that could have happened to me," Perkins said.
The Warriors track and field team will be heading back to Saddleback College for the Southern California finals Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. "It is time for everyone to rise and compete at their very highest level, they," Dean Lofgren, coach, said. Some of EC's athletes are freshmen, such as Roy Alugbue and Jason Hanakeawe "This is what they've being working for this whole season," Lofgren said.
Thunder, lightning and heavy drops of rain are not the best environment for a swimming meet, but for six athletes from the men's and women's swimming teams, the show must go on for the state finals. The state finals start today and will end Saturday at Diablo Valley College located upstate at Concord where scattered thunderstorms are expected to hit the area for the next few days.
With the score tied at five in the top of the ninth inning, Billy Hernandez faced a two-strike, two-ball, one-out count with a runner on second base. Hostility filled the air as the EC crowd cheered for a hit, while the Long Beach fans roared for a strikeout.
From the three doubles teams and two individuals that went to the Southern California Regionals, came one advancement to the state finals with the No. 1 doubles pairing of Michelle Morse and Michele McGarry. Morse and McGarry advanced deep enough in the regional tournament to be one of the top eight teams from Southern California.
A mere four strokes was the difference between moving on to the celebrated regional state finals and putting away the irons and woods until next spring. While trying their best to drive, chip and putt their way to victory at the Southern California Golf Association members' club in Murrieta last Monday, Marc Kawasoe and Andrew Pulaski were not able to qualify as one of the final six players to advance to the state finals in Fresno.
Two mighty badminton teams engaged in a clash of the titans last Wednesday. When the smoke cleared, one battle-weary team stood holding the coveted conference championship. EC was able to beat the favored Pasadena City College Lancers 13-8 to win the South Coast Conference title last week, an amazing feat considering it was the Warriors' fifth consecutive crown.
